The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test at the undergraduate level (NEET-UG) is a national level single entrance examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

It is a mandatory test for admission to MBBS/BDS courses in India offered by medical/dental colleges approved by the Medical/Dental Council of India under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

NEET-UG came into force in May 2016, replacing the previous popular All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all entrance examinations conducted by states or autonomous institutions. The aim is to offer everyone a fair and equal chance at the national level of clearing a single-window entrance examination for admission to any medical institution in India.

It is today the one and the only gateway to MBBS/BDS programs nationwide. All central and state government and private and minority institutions across the country that offer around 90,000 MBBS and BDS seats are required to consider the NEET score as a vital part of their admission procedure.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must be an Indian citizen and must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the first year MBBS/BDS course. Apart from Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Foreign Nationals are eligible to appear for NEET.

Candidates of all categories will be allowed a maximum of three attempts, with the first attempt being taken into account from NEET 2017 onwards. Those belonging to the General Category should have passed Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-technology and English individually, having secured a combined minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology in the qualifying examination.

Candidates of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Classes must have scored an overall minimum 40% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology in the qualifying examination.

A minimum of 45% marks is mandatory for aspirants with locomotor disability of lower limbs for General-PH and 40% marks will be required for SC-PH/ST-PH/OBC-PH candidates.

Exam Structure

The duration of NEET will be 3 hours comprising 180 questions. Questions are of objective type: multiple-choice questions (MCQ); you have to choose one right option from four given choices. Every correct answer will earn you four marks. You should remember that there is negative marking: 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

Apart from English, the examination is held in Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Odia and Kannada for the benefit of aspirants comfortable to write the examination in their respective regional languages.

What was NEET 2017 like?

NEET 2017 saw that nearly 6.11 lakh candidates cleared the qualifying NEET. A total of 11, 38,890 students sat for NEET 2017 that included 1,522 NRIs, 480 OCIs, 70 PIOs and 613 foreign students. The examination was conducted in 10 different languages in 1,921 exam centers.
